As part of the institutional activities of the Foundation, there are relationships with the Great Alfonsine Order. Last year, 2023, a large group of residents from Guimarães visited, and a statue of King Afonso Henriques, created by sculptor Dinis Ribeiro and architect Abel Cardoso, was donated to the Foundation's gardens.
This year, the Great Alfonsine Order, accompanied by over a hundred people, was received at the Foundation's facilities in Zamora on the afternoon of Saturday, the 18th. They were welcomed with a musical and dance performance by the traditional Zamoran cultural group, Doña Urraca. Following this, homage acts to the King took place, including a declamation by a young "picolino," a tradition from Guimarães that aspires to be a World Heritage. Later, a protocol act was held with the attendance of Christoph Strieder, representing the City Council of Zamora. The day concluded with a tasting of quality foods in collaboration with the Exquisiteza association.
On Sunday, the Secretary-General attended Mass at the Cathedral, officiated by the Bishop of Zamora, Don Fernando Valera. After the morning's activities organized by the Zamora Center for Tourist Initiatives, the group was received in Bragança by the Vice-President of its City Council, Mrs. Fernanda Silva.

GROUP VISIT OF THE ABADE BAÇAL SCHOOL CLUSTER FROM BRAGANÇA TO THE CLAUDIO MOYANO INSTITUTE IN ZAMORA AND TO THE FOUNDATION HEADQUARTERS IN ZAMORA
This activity falls within Activity 4.- GENERAL INSTITUTIONAL, particularly under the Collaboration Agreements with the Zamora City Council and the Municipality of Bragança.
As part of the objective to establish a collaboration channel between this Secondary Education Institute in Zamora, which offers Portuguese language studies to its students, and the Abade Baçal School Cluster in Bragança, which in turn offers Spanish language studies, a return visit was made following the one that took place in Bragança on May 3rd.
After visiting the Institute, the students from both Centers moved to the Foundation's facilities, where they participated in an escape room activity that allowed them to interact with each other.
Additionally, a guided tour of the facilities was conducted, with special attention given to the presentation of the activities of the Europe Direct Centre in Zamora.
The attendees had lunch at the Foundation, once again sharing moments of mutual understanding and language practice.
In the afternoon, a tourist-cultural visit was organized starting from the Cathedral Square, where the Portuguese guests could learn about the characteristics of Zamora's historic center, ending the visit with free time in its modernist area.
Teachers from both centers were able to discuss the possibilities of conducting collaborative activities for the next academic year, particularly the possibility of organizing longer stays of more than one day in both cities.
EUROPE DAY ACTIVITIES FROM MAY 8TH TO MAY 10TH
Within the activities of the Europe Direct Centre in Zamora, activities related to the celebration of Europe Day were developed between May 8th and May 10th.
On May 8th, it began with a media call where planned activities were presented, starting with the visit of a group of secondary school students from IES Santísima Trinidad in Zamora. With this group, a Contest with the theme "The European Union and Me" was held for the first time, an activity available on the learning corner of the EU's own website.
On May 9th, an Open Day took place, where both individuals and another group of students from the town of Benavente were received, who were able to learn about the activities of the Europe Direct Centre in Zamora.
On May 10th, an afternoon activity was scheduled, consisting of a podcast radio program for young people, with the theme of Europe Day, in which, along with contests and other activities, the Secretary-General was interviewed through questions about the European Union.
During these three days of activities, there was an intense schedule of interviews with the media to incorporate information about the importance of commemorating Europe Day.
This activity is part of Activity 4, "GENERAL INSTITUTIONAL", within the framework of Collaboration Agreements with the City Council of Zamora and the Municipal Chamber of Bragança.
The main objective of this visit is to establish a collaboration channel between the Claudio Moyano Secondary Education Institute in Zamora, which offers Portuguese language studies to its students, and the Agrupamento de Escolas Abade Baçal in Bragança, which in turn offers Spanish language studies.
During the activity, participants had the opportunity to visit the Historic Center of Bragança, as well as the Portuguese headquarters of the Foundation, and to get to know the Agrupamento de Escolas up close. The main focus was on fostering interaction among students.
At the reception of the group at our headquarters in Bragança, we had the presence of Mrs. Fernanda Silva, Vice President of the Municipal Chamber.
This meeting will be followed by another one that will take place in Zamora on May 10th.
During the morning of April 30th, the Rei Afonso Henriques Foundation organized a meeting with local and regional media outlets with the purpose of presenting the European Union institutional campaign regarding the upcoming European elections. During the meeting, audiovisual resources were displayed, and tools aimed at promoting awareness of the elections and their importance for European citizens were shared, with particular attention to the citizens of Zamora.
The campaign can be accessed on the official website of the European elections: https://elections.europa.eu/es/
Its goal is to encourage active citizen participation in the electoral process, highlighting the value of democracy and the importance of individual voting in the future of Europe.
In order to comply with the legal obligation of facilitating visits to the Cultural Heritage Site housing the headquarters of the Rei Afonso Henriques Foundation in Zamora, located in the former Convent of San Francisco Extrapontem, a guided tour was organized on the last Saturday of April. This initiative aims to maintain the regularity of such visits on the last Saturdays of each month, provided there are no other activities preventing it.
On this occasion, a group of twenty-five people participated in the activity, which was supported by architect Alberto Alonso. During the tour, the architect presented both the original architectural features of the building and its historical construction process, as well as the most recent renovations carried out to adapt it as the current headquarters of the Foundation in Zamora.
Following the courtesy of an invitation extended by the Presidency of the Municipal Chamber of Bragança, we had the privilege of attending an evocative session held at the Forte São João de Deus Memory Center, located in the town square. The occasion not only provided a space for reflection and remembrance but also served as a meeting point for the community, where meaningful experiences were shared and the fundamental values of our society were celebrated.
The Library of the Rei Afonso Henriques Foundation was the setting for a commemorative event in honor of the 50th anniversary of April 25th, an emblematic date that marked the end of fascism and the beginning of democracy in Portugal. The event, organized jointly by FRAH and the Sabaria Association, featured the distinguished presence of Perfecto Cuadrado, a professor of Galician and Portuguese Philology, who delivered the conference entitled "Love as the Road Begins". During the conference, the life and work of Mário Cesariny de Vasconcelos, a prominent poet and painter recognized as the main representative of Portuguese surrealism, were explored. The close relationship between surrealism and the Carnation Revolution was analyzed, highlighting Cesariny's role as a fervent defender of creative freedom in times of oppression. The collaboration of Concha Jambrina, President of the Sabaria Cultural Association, further enriched the event. In summary, the journey provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the importance of art and freedom in society. April 25th reminds us that freedom is the greatest treasure of a people, a legacy that we must protect and celebrate with every step we take towards a fairer and freer future.
At the request of the Municipality of Bragança, a press conference was called to present the Third "Meia Maratona das Cantarinhas", which will take place in Bragança on May 12, 2024.

This event, organized by the Municipality of Bragança and Ginásio Clube de Bragança, offers routes ranging from 5 km to 21 km, as well as free races for children. The participation of athletes such as Dulce Félix and Ricardo Ribas was highlighted, as well as cash prizes and medals for the top finishers.
The Half Marathon is part of the "Feira das Cantarinhas," supported by local institutions, and includes a sports products fair. José Luis González Prada, Secretary-General of the Rei Afonso Henriques Foundation, is confident in the positive response from the people of Zamora, while Miguel Abrunhosa, Councilor of the Municipality of Bragança, expects a large influx of visitors to Bragança.
It is a privilege to share with you the exciting experience we had on April 13th during the meeting between the Association and College of Graduates and Technical Industrial Engineers of Zamora and the Northern Delegation of the Order of Engineers. It is an honor to share the encounter we had on April 10th and 11th with a group of students from the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, thanks to the initiative of CIM Terras de Trás-os-Montes. The purpose of this visit was to provide students with the opportunity to get firsthand experience of the functioning of the Spanish democratic system.
During these two days, we organized a series of activities in which the students could immerse themselves in the political and administrative life of our region. We began with a warm reception at the City Hall of Salamanca on the morning of the first day, followed by visits to key institutions such as the City Hall of Zamora, the Provincial Council of Zamora, the Territorial Delegation of the Junta of Castilla y León, and the Government Subdelegation, during the second day.
In addition to formal activities, we also set aside time to enjoy the charm of the historic center of Zamora, allowing the students to discover the cultural and historical richness of our region.
We are pleased to highlight that the visit was not only enriching for the students, but we also identified opportunities for future collaboration with the City Hall and Municipal Assembly of Macedo de Cavaleiros, as well as with their School Grouping. We are excited about the possibilities of working together on projects that benefit both communities and promote cultural and educational exchange.
At our accommodation, we strive to offer meaningful experiences that go beyond the stay itself. We are grateful for the trust placed in us by CIM Terras de Trás-os-Montes and look forward to continuing to be a meeting point for valuable initiatives like this in the future.
